The Fender Jazzmaster red and white asymmetrical guitar design is probably one of the most easily recognized guitars in the world, even for people that are unfamiliar with the world of guitars, but how did this great guitar get to become a classic for Fender?
The company
Fender is probably the most well-known electric guitar manufacturer in the United States, and the company with the best success in sales of electric guitars as well. Fender was created by Leo Fender in 1946. The company actually doesn’t exclusively design electric guitars at all. It is known for designing all kinds of musical instruments and accessories for electric guitars as well. You can even occasionally find clothing with the Fender label on it, which shows the amazing commercial success of this company.
The guitar
The Fender Jazzmaster, created in 1958, was a very unique guitar compared to previous models of Fender guitars. It had a much larger size and a very unusual shape as well. The red and white design was a striking and beautiful contrast. The guitar also had a very unique coil as well. This was never used before on any single coil guitar. This guitar made a very unique noise, but was also unfortunately prone to a little more feedback than normal.
The design of the Fender Jazzmaster was created for a single purpose. It was meant to be the perfect electric guitar for jazz musicians. The wide, asymmetrical design was supposed to be played while sitting down. This is something that was very common for jazz musicians and less common for other types of musicians. The only problem for jazz musicians that made them really not enjoy the Jazzmaster as much as predicted was the amount of feedback that it gave.
The Fender Jazzmaster was not something preferred by the musicians for whom it was designed. This is pretty detrimental to a guitar design usually. Usually was not the case with this guitar, though. Fender actually experienced a great twist of luck here, and not once, but twice. This guitar was picked up by surf musicians in the early 1960s. They enjoyed the shape of it for their desires. Of course, surf rock didn’t last forever, and the Fender Jazzmaster went out of production for a little under a decade in the 1980s.
Fortunately, the Fender Jazzmaster was discovered yet again. This time, rock bands in the late 1980s took interest in the wonderfully unusual sound of this great red and white guitar. They loved it for their unusual rising style of rock. And so, the Jazzmaster was again a popular item. Since then, the Fender Jazzmaster has been viewed as a classic and one of the best electric guitars created by Fender.
